I just had to say that the Autumns produce great b-sides - i know there aren't many singles that have been released, but the ones that have contain some great songs! I recently bought 'Boy with the aluminium stilts', and Lotus Leaves and Garlands are probably two of the best songs the Autumns have recorded! This led me to listen to 'Il Duce' off of the 'Every Sunday Sky' single, and again it is a really great song (it also reminded me of the new songs from the Demolisten radio show...which is a very good thing!)! Anyway...i cant wait for the new single (or singles) to hear more great Autumns songs that haven't made it onto the album - which really tells you just how good the albums must be if the b-sides are that good!!!!

One of my long-standing beliefs is that the true measure of a great band is the quality of material that didn't make the cut for a studio album release. This could be b-sides, one-off singles, remixes, live-only material, etc. but essentially the band is saying, "we had better quality material for the album and these are the leftovers." If the "leftovers" are great in their own right, now we can gauge the depth of talent. I point to several examples that support this argument: 1) U2 - Yes, they're a global juggernaut and I'm a huge fan, but I rarely listen to their studio albums anymore (overplayed, probably). I prefer their b-sides, side projects, and live recordings. 2) Radiohead - Thom Yorke and Co. have proven time and again that their best songs aren't necessarily the ones on the album. Case in point: the fan-circulated bootleg "Towering Above the Rest" which is a 10-CD compilation of their non-album material - that's more songs than their proper records! 3) Coldplay - Some of X&Y's b-sides should've taken the place of the weaker tracks on that record. 4) Doves - Lost Sides is an excellent disc of rarities 5) Catherine Wheel - Like the Autumns, criminally underrated. Great b-sides that other bands would sell their souls for. 6) Editors - Relatively young band, but their 2005 debut album (which had 11 songs on it) yielded an astounding 15 b-sides, most of which were on par or better than the album tracks 6) The Autumns (of course... was there ever any doubt?)

And to that end, I hope that all that talk about the Autumns releasing a b-sides collection at some point wasn't just a passing fad. It would be a great way to show how consistently great they really are!

i'm pretty sure there is an ep's worth of b-side material floating around that we do intend to release. last i heard frank was ragging on matthew to record vocals for an unfinished track to be included and that was all that we were waiting for. however, if any of you have spoken to matthew you know that, like the rest of the band, he is ever looking forward creatively and revisiting old material, even for one day, is not at the forefront of his priorities. that being said, he really ought to get himself into the studio for a day so we can get these tracks out. i'm not saying you should pester him about it but well...
also, if you're not already privy (which i'm sure if you're logged on to this forum you probably are) and are interested in all things autumns related, the sound of animal's fighting are re-releasing their first album but are including a re-mix of "the heretic" which features matt's vocals. if it's the same re-mix that i've heard it's Really well done (possibly better than original). also, there are a slew of side projects to look forward that are both bizarre and beautiful to which members of the autumns have been contributing. the working titles include Dead Twin and Pyramids. there is also a collaborative effort with Ben from The Sugarplastic in the works.
so, as you can see there is a lot of stuff going on. all of this on top of weddings to plan, children to raise, educative goals, and careers to maintain. as for the new record, the final masters are in the bella union's hands and it is slated for a fall release. no one is impatiently anticipating the release more than the band as we continue to be extremely excited about the material. i know the wait has been long but, as with all labors of love, we took our time. i'm sure that, despite the odd grumblings about delays, you guys wouldn't have it any other way.
wow, i've gotten quite long winded in my post-show hang-over daze.
peace,
-dust
P.S. the name of the track that awaits matthew's vocals is "the belle of the ball in the gallery of the grotesque", if you've been coming to shows for a while you might remember it as that sort of creepy waltz with the violin. it's one of my personal favorites from before i was in the band.

Exciting news, indeed... please keep the fans posted on when/where we'll be able to obtain any b-sides/rarities or material released from the side projects, including the SOAF re-release (The Heretic is one of my favorite songs, so a remix that is supposedly better than the original is intriguing). Oh, and I'll second mimsy's comment that "Belle of the Ball..." was a great live song that should see the light of day on a proper release. I remember a video of it that was posted on the old incarnation of the website (maybe 5+ years ago?). C'mon Matthew... all we're asking for is one day (maybe even a partial day if you're efficient)!

my question probably fits into this thread a little. i bought an autumns cdr online some time ago, but wasn't able to play it (i can see the data, but my walkman won't read it); it's some sort of demo ('demo sessions 8/15/2000' written on the cd). does anyone know anything about this? thank ys,
.f
oh it has every sunday sky, porcelain, flail dins & lux on it, supposedly.

raulus, the timing of your post is eerie in that I recently saw an internet listing for this supposed "demo" CD. I emailed the seller to find out more details about it (specifically if the familiar songs were different from their "official" versions, and what exactly is "Porcelain", as it's not familiar to me at all). Problem is, the seller never emailed me back, so I figured that the item was already sold, or that the seller was lazy (either of which is a deal-killer for me).
You mention that "you can see the data, but your walkman won't read it." What exactly does this mean? Have you tried playing the CD on your computer, and if so, what happens? What about other stand-alone CD players other than your walkman?
I'm on the fence as to the origins of this CD. It's likely a bootleg of material that the band hasn't agreed to share with the public, but how the seller(s) obtained it (and what they obtained) is a mystery. The listing I saw wasn't cheap, but it was reasonable enough that if the seller had come back with answers to my basic questions, I might've bought it. It sounds like raulus got a raw deal if in fact the CDR you purchased doesn't play anything.

hmmm that's interesting. I know that a gift E.P. was given to those who attended the fund-raising concert for the Self Titled release. I think that Lux and Flail Dins were on that, but I'm pretty sure that Every Sunday Sky was not. I don't know what that "demo" CD is...

The Gift EP included the following: 1. Lux 2. Flail Dins 3. IL Duce 4. Unfolding & Fading (demo)
Edge, I'm very intriqued by this find too...specifically for "Porcelain." Does the band wish to comment on this mysterious song? If not, maybe we'll get lucky and it will end up on the above mentioned collection Dustin brings to light...one in which I hope sees the light.

It sounds to me like the whole thing is a bit dodgy...there is a chance that it could be a Cd of Autumns demos from the writing period of the self-titled album...but would they want those to be available to the public??? Alternatively, they might have sent a demo cd to record companies, as at the time they wouldn't have been signed, so someone might have been able to get hold of it - but i think it's unlikely!!! 'Porcelain' could just have been a working title...or a whole new song....but i would be highly sceptical about it, especially as it won't play...

I just can't wait for ANY new Autumns' material...be it b-sides, the album, demos...it's such a long wait...and i hate waiting...im so impatient....they should give us something to keep our patience from running out....a new single...or an exclusive live track...or a video....or a message telling us (myself in particular) to stop moaning about things on their forum...i can't actually believe how much i do complain...as i've said before tho...it's fun to complain...i really need to stop now...i should be revising...i've got my last exam tomorrow...i don't like exams...or working...how did my post turn into this...help...

wish...i've been there where you are at currently...granted the stress of exams/work will make you yearn for anything other, but you get the point. i've been a fan of these guys music for the last 10 yrs or so, so waiting is the game we all play here. you don't get into their music for the long term without knowing you have to wait for the good stuff. most everyone knows that right?!
you'll be OK. just talk to your therapist about it, be it a significant other, a close college friend, whatever...you'll make it. we're all here for you buddy. and I think I can safely say The Autumns are too.
I do like the idea of a track up on the website or MySpace page. Band Members, I mean Dustin...any comment? or help for that matter.

I too would like to see them post a new song on their myspace page to whet our appetite. Although that may be even more of a tease than it not being there...
