Have a complilation CD titled "Songs You've Never Heard (Light Vol. 2)" for sale. This contains two songs from The Autumns: - Briar Patch - My Rainbow in the Cloud This CD was released on Ocean Records in 1995, thus predates their "Suicide..." EP. If you absolutely have to own every song ever released by The Autumns, then post a reply and name your price.

These are some ooooold songs.
Personally, I think that if you're really into hearing the very beginnings of The Autumns and listening to how they have evolved artistically, it is worth getting hold of.

I had picked up a copy of this CD from Amazon a couple of weeks ago for ~$5. Despite the original poster's implications that this is an ultra-rare CD, I was able to locate 3-4 of them on eBay and 1-2 on Amazon after about 15 minutes of searching.
In any event, I agree with mimsy's assessment in that if you're a completist, it's definitely worth picking up. I don't think that the songs are earth-shattering, but I enjoyed hearing the band during its early gestation period - they show some glimmers of the things to come (though I might be swayed by 20/20 hindsight!).
Cheers,
edge

edge! is it worth the $5?
like you said there are a couple on amazon right now that with shipping would be $5
my sine wave of musical listening has returned to the autumns and i'm a-lookin' for something new! (and how did i own fake noise toys, boys! for this long and not realize how beautiful the bootiful boot was !?!)
is it stuff that would fit in with that suicide ep thing like lotsa reverb and soaring autumnsy vocals and all that or is it like hearing that bjork cd she made when she was 12 and you're just like wtf, bjork!?

I also ordered a copy from America to here in the UK and I wasn't disappointed with what I got - yes, there are only 2 tracks, but it's interesting to hear the progression from these early tracks to the stuff that followed. They aren't the best of songs but are entertaining none the less, with some classic lines 'please don't put me in the briar patch' and 'I put my rainbow in the clouds and now I don't know where it is'...they always manage to make me smile!
The band sound very British on these songs and you can definitely hear their influences coming through...I would recommend you buy this CD if it's cheap and you want to hear some rare stuff.

After checking in periodically (i.e., every month or so), I'm finally rewarded with some new posts on the board! Wishstars, I hope you're doing well! This CD's definitely worth the $5 to the Autumns completist out there. Even their worst effort is better than 90% of the "best" material from other bands...

yeah these tunes are not too bad .. briar patch is a bit slow and kinda has that perfect mid 90's 'collective soul' feel to it (i don't know why i think of that but i do) while my rainbow in the cloud is quite a little pop gem that feels like a precursor to apple from that strelly suicide ep. you know, it's got a good beat and you can dance to it.
on both tunes matt (it says matt in the liner notes) doesn't sing in falsetto except for a little of the backing vocals in briar patch. so initially it didn't really sound like the autumns from later albums. i like the backing 'oooohs' in briar patch and the song basically breaks down into three related sections.
basic chord progression to briar patch:
x02200 (Asus) 200200 (Dsus/F#) x02200 (Asus) 200230 (Dsus/F#)
then the descending chromatic chord thing:
x3201x (C) x2000x (G/B) x133xx (Bb) x0220x (Asus)
and the rockin' out part (power chords!) :
3x000x (G5) x022xx (A5) 133xxx (F5) 022xxx (E5)
there's some chorus and a little tremolo effect on the guitars and it's got a very smooth, watery feel to it.
my rainbow in the cloud is darn catchy. the first couple times i heard it reminded me of a slightly slowed-down smiths hand in glove with the jangly, layered guitars. i have learned it and can play it pretty close as recorded .. if anyone wants me to tab it out i can - it's pretty easy to play but is more than just strumming chords.
even though it's not sung in falsetto it's right at the top of my limited range. the chorus goes up to a high 'g' and i really have to strain to hit it (matt makes it sound easy of course) but it's a nice catchy little melody they got going on.
one thing that helps propel rainbow along is the snare drum that comes in on the '4 and' beat during the chorus. usually the snare is on 2 and 4 but it comes in right on 2 and then half a beat after the 4 so it sort of lurches but in a good way. red hot chili peppers did this in their mega-smash hit soul to squeeze for example.
does anyone know what the first line of the chorus is? i can't make it out:
i went so low the hall was bent (what?) i went so high i lost my head i put my rainbow in a cloud(s) now i don't know where it is
good stuff !!

Hey Edge - good to see you're still checking in...I'm doing quite well, or at least as well as I can be without any Autumns!! Hope you're good too! Anywho, I have just spent the last 10mins repeating the 'my rainbow...' chorus and that is the only line in the song where I can't hear what Matthew's saying - in the first chorus it sounds like: 'I went so low the heart was bed' ...then in the second it sounds like ' I went so low the heart was bled' - so it is possibly one of the two... Sigh - I guess it just wouldn't be the Autumns if you could work out what Matthew was singing all the time.

They are known for those mysterious lyrics that everyone always seems to get wrong...
