enjoying the KXLU peformance as I write this...any chance of breaking the tracks down and posting them to the website for download? I used to be able to do this, and will still have to check on that, but curious to know if you guys have the cabilities to, or a friend of the band that could.
everything sounds great...new tunes are different, but good nonetheless. looking forward to hearing the studio versions of the new tracks when realeased.

Just finished listening to the KXLU session from last Friday...
(Disclaimer: Most of my favorite songs/albums take me awhile to fully appreciate, so my impressions of the new songs will likely change dramatically with repeated listens and hearing the CD versions later this year.)
My first thought was, "the band has taken the noisy bridge section from 'June in Her Frost and Fur' and created entire songs with that aesthetic." While I wasn't necessarily turned off by the abrasive nature of the tunes, I struggled to find the underlying melodies that are typical of their past work. Based on a single listen, it appeared to be noise for noise's sake.
All that said, I think the danger of hearing new songs like this is that I'm lacking the context of the album (and frankly, familiarity with the songs). I'm sure it'll make more sense when the album drops later this year.
I'll second nocturnes' request for individual mp3's. I don't have any easy way of extracting just the Autumns' tracks, so any help would be appreciated.
(By the way, was the interviewer really not aware of the self-titled disc, or did it just slip his mind? Kudos to Matthew for making that gentle plug for that masterpiece!)
Cheers,
J.

i just had to add myself to this debate, as, on first listen i was quite worried about the new material...not very impressed...bit messy...
However - after listening to it again (and again and again), ive gotta say it is extremely catchy and has REALLY grown on me - just by the second listen i was singing along with the choruses (although i have absolutely no idea what Matthew's singing - i just make random noises!!!!)! I think these could be my fave songs...and thats saying something as i love the other albums, though i am worried that i might over-listen to them if im not careful!!!
I gotta say though, are all californian dj's like that??? They didnt seem altogether with it....although they do make me laugh at times!!!
Anyway, one more point that has got me worried is when Matthew says 'Fall release'...i thought it was gonna be a May/June release??? Its even worse for me cause im in England - so i wont be able to get the new album for AGES!!! Arghhhhh.... *rant over*

The record is completed and in the hands of Bella Union (EU) and World's Fair (US). To properly promote and release the album the labels have to wait until fall. I believe the releases will be around the same time, so don't you fret about having to wait longer for the album to hit the UK. I agree that the new stuff is more aggressive than most of their previous releases, however they definitely have not lost sight of the gorgeous melodies from what I have heard thus far. I think once more music is released and we've all had more of a chance to listen to the album in its entirety it will all begin to make sense... except the lyrics... but who knows? Maybe they'll print them with the liner notes this time.

One more thing...
The show was on KXLU's demolisten, who pride themselves on being lo-fi and promoting little known acts (whether you like 'em or not). I believe that because of this, the sound quality was intended to be more gritty. I could be wrong, but that was very much my impression from listening to the whole show.

Thanks for the update Mimsy! The time between albums seems to make each new offering an "event" of sorts.
Oh, and I've listened to the KXLU session a few more times now, and (as expected) the new songs have really grown on me. This was confirmed when I woke up yesterday humming the 3rd song's "chorus"...
Cheers,
J.

far be it for me to come to the defense of california DJ's but they aren't completely at fault in this instance. although critically acclaimed, the self titled record didn't really receive the distribution it deserved in the US. while bella has done a great job overseas, not much has happened stateside. that being said, a simple trip to the website, or even just googling the band name would have educated the aforementioned DJ to ALL of our releases. oh well.
as for the performance, well, radio appearances are notoriously difficult under ordinary circumstances and the autumns are way beyond ordinary. the sheer volume put out by our abundance of amplifiers and possibly the loudest drumming in history makes things a bit difficult to balance. it makes for a great live sound but capturing it for radio is no small feat and i have nothing but praise for the engineer.
keeping all that in mind, the songwriting is significantly different this time around. many of our more punk rock and avant garde indy influences show through in a record that is far more concise and immediate than the previous works. however, there are still epic productions. track one has a blistering organ, violins, walls of guitars, and a crashing ocean of drums, but it all happens in about 30 seconds. as for the melodies, well, in my opinion matthew has truly developed a style all his own and the record includes many of the soaring vocals we've become accustomed to along with some other more jarring and angular moves that serve as a welcome counterpoint. all that is coupled with a unique new sense of pop songwriting.
the record also includes some more delicate pieces that haven't made it into the live show so the in studio performance is a little skewed toward the aggressive.
i feel a little strange, like i've been writing a review of my own record, but i guess, like the rest of the band, i'm really excited about it. i just couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about it. i hope i can see you all when we eventually tour and can't wait to hear what you think of the new record when it gets released.

PS. sorry about the the release date being pushed back. we insisted on producing the entire thing ourselves and therefore had to do it as cheaply as possible. that meant countless delays during the mixing and production process. also, we have very rich and time consuming personal lives and the past few years have been no exception.

Dustin, thanks for your post. Although the activity on this board isn't overwhelming (I think someone had made the comment that Autumns fans are mostly voyeurs!), it's great to see that the band is taking the time to interact. Obviously, you're uniquely positioned to comment on issues related to DJ's, radio broadcasts, etc. and it makes for a fascinating read.
Your brief comments about the new record are intriguing. They only make me want to hear the new songs that much more. Your notes articulate the "Autumns sound" quite well - perhaps your bandmates should make you the head of the Autumns marketing department! (I admit I don't need much convincing to purchase the new record, but what about the unconverted?)
I'm also glad to hear that the band is still able to maintain control of its own destiny, which is a rarity in today's music industry.
Cheers,
J.

Being the completist nut-job that I am, I'm trying to finalize the setlist from the KXLU session and, as such, I have two questions, now that the tracklist for the new record has been confirmed: 1) Is that little burst of noisy indie rock at the very beginning of the set (immediately preceding "Boys" and starting with the line "Mow that they know [love?] you...") the first track on the new record, Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers? 2) Which new song is sandwiched between "Killer in Drag" and "Clem"? It's a short, two-and-a-half minute tune with lullaby-like verses that morphs into heavier guitars by the end. Based on track time alone, I guess it could very well be "The Beautiful Boot" but if the band could go ahead and officially confirm the title, that would be great (as Bill Lumbergh would say). Cheers, edge
